What is FUT, the strip method?
FUT stands for Follicular Unit Transplantation, better known as the strip method. The physician uses a scalpel to remove a horizontal strip of scalp from the back of the head. Technicians dissect that strip under microscopes to separate the follicular units. The donor area is then closed with stitches or staples.
The closure leaves a permanent linear scar across the back of the head. Short or faded haircuts usually reveal it, so most FUT patients keep the back longer. Because the scalp is closed under tension, recovery is longer, more restrictive, and more uncomfortable.

FUE stands for Follicular Unit Extraction. The physician extracts individual follicles one by one with a micro-punch instrument, under local anesthesia. No scalpel, no stitches, and no linear scar. Each extraction site is a tiny pin-hole that closes within days. FUE is now the most common method: the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) 2025 Practice Census found FUE harvesting in 85.4% of male and 68.2% of female hair transplant procedures performed in 2024.

When FUT is still used
FUT is not obsolete for everyone. Advanced Hair Restoration® reserves it for select cases where the donor area needs a different approach. The clearest example is scar revision, including work on an old strip scar. Certain female hair transplants can also call for it. Your physician makes that decision after examining your scalp in person and explains why.

The truth about FUE pricing
You may have heard elsewhere that FUE costs far more than FUT. That is often a pricing tactic, not a medical fact. Across the industry, the cost gap has largely evened out. Some clinics charge a premium for FUE, or steer patients to the strip method, because they lack a team trained for large FUE procedures.
Advanced Hair Restoration® prices per graft. Most procedures fall between $5,000 and $15,000+, and FUE carries no premium over the strip method here. Graft count is the biggest driver of your total, and there are no hidden fees.
