How hair transplant pricing works
Most clinics price a hair transplant by the graft. A graft is a follicular unit, a natural grouping of 1 to 4 hairs, moved from the back and sides of your scalp to the area that is thinning. Your total cost is the number of grafts your plan calls for multiplied by a per-graft rate.
That per-graft rate is not fixed. At Advanced Hair, it scales with the size of the procedure: the more grafts you need, the less each graft costs. A 3,000 graft procedure does not cost three times as much as a 1,000 graft procedure. This is why the national range is wide. A small hairline touch-up sits near the bottom of the $5,000-$15,000+ range. A full restoration of the front and crown in a single day sits near the top.

Where you land depends on your hair loss pattern, your donor supply, your hair characteristics, and the density you want. A few reference points from our planning guidance: hairline restoration usually takes 1,500 to 2,500 grafts, crown work 2,000 to 3,500 grafts, and a full restoration 3,000 to 5,000+ grafts. Each graft carries 1 to 4 hairs, so 2,000 grafts is roughly 4,000 to 6,000 individual hairs.
The graft bands in the table are a rough guide only. Two people with the same pattern of hair loss can need very different graft counts, because hair thickness, curl, color contrast and donor density all change how much coverage each graft delivers.
What changes the price
Six things move a hair transplant quote. Graft count is the biggest by far. The rest adjust the per-graft rate.
1. Graft count
More coverage means more grafts. This is the single largest factor in your final price. A small hairline correction and a full front-to-crown restoration are different procedures with different day lengths, different team sizes, and different totals. It is not just the size of the thinning area. Thick, coarse or curly hair gives more visual coverage per graft, so fewer grafts reach the same look of density. Fine, straight hair with low contrast between hair and skin color usually needs more grafts to reach the same result. Your physician accounts for this when setting your graft count.

What the alternatives cost
A transplant costs more up front than any other hair loss treatment. It is also the only option that moves permanent, DHT-resistant hair into areas that are already bald; medications can slow loss and regrow some hair but do not restore a bald area. A transplant is a one-time expense. Every alternative is an ongoing one. Medications
Finasteride and minoxidil are FDA-approved treatments that slow hair loss, and they can regrow some hair. They do not grow all of your hair back. Their greatest benefit is slowing the loss you have not had yet. They are a recurring cost for as long as you use them, and if you stop, you gradually lose the hair they were preserving. Many of our physicians pair a transplant with medication to protect the native hair around the transplanted area.
PRP and laser therapy
Platelet-rich plasma and low-level laser therapy can help preserve the hair you have, and they are ongoing treatments rather than a one-time procedure. Only a transplant moves permanent, DHT-resistant hair into areas that are already bald. If a procedure is not the right move for you yet, these are honest options, and your physician will say so.
Hair systems and concealers
A hair piece or hair system costs less than a transplant on day one, then keeps costing for as long as you wear it. Fibers and concealers hide thinning for a day at a time. Neither grows hair. A transplant costs more than a hair piece, but the results are permanent and the cost is a one-time expense.
Waiting
Hair loss is progressive, and a larger area later means a larger graft count later. Addressing it earlier, while the work can be camouflaged as transplanted hair grows in, often means a smaller procedure. You do not have to wait until you stop losing hair to start.
A warning about bargain hair transplants
When you research hair transplant cost, you will find clinics advertising ultra-low prices, often overseas and sometimes in the United States. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) warns patients against choosing a clinic on price over medical credentials. In bargain clinics, the procedure is frequently performed by unlicensed technicians rather than physicians.
Choosing on price alone often results in:
- Unnatural, pluggy hairlines that are hard to correct
- Over-harvested donor areas, leaving permanent thin patches on the back of the head
- Scarring or infection
- Poor growth, which means paying again to fix it
Your donor hair is a limited supply. A bad first transplant spends it, and a repair costs more than doing it right the first time. Before you book anywhere, ask who performs the extraction and placement, how many procedures the physician has done, and what happens if the hair does not grow.
